The history of the city of Chekhov is inextricably linked with the work of the great Russian writer Anton Pavlovich, who spent many years in the nearby Melikhovo estate, writing the best of his works. As a rule, travelers come here for one or two days, because despite the picturesque surroundings, there is not much entertainment in the town itself. Nevertheless, it is convenient to use Chekhov as a transit point for trips to the nearest places of interest: to the Melikhovo estate or to Talezh.

The city's day is celebrated in the last weekend of August with mass festivities and salute.

The station is in the east of the city, to the center - 1-1, 5 km, 10-15 minutes of pleasant walks.

Talizh and Melikhovo

Melikhovo is located 12 km west of the city, you can get there by taxi or bus number 25 (20 minutes on the way, departure every half hour). On your own car - along the M2 Moscow - Orel to Chekhov, and there turn off on a parallel route to the manor (about 7 km, follow the signs "Melikhovo"). Talezh is on the same road, another 7-10 kilometers to the east, in the opposite direction from Chekhov.

A bit of history

Despite the fact that Chekhov was founded only recently, in 1954, this place is famous for its rich history. The city itself was founded on the site of the village of Lopasnya, near which, in the estate of Melikhovo, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov lived for seven years. This time is not in vain called the most fruitful in the writer's work: it was here that he wrote his famous plays "Uncle Vanya" and "The Seagull". The latter, by the way, today flaunts on a blue background on the coat of arms of the city.

In addition, the history of the city is inextricably linked with another "writer's" surname: in Chekhov is the manor Lopasnya-Zachatievskoe. Here lived close relatives and descendants of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin, many of which are now buried in the family crypt. It turns out that after the death of the poet Natalia Goncharova married Peter Lansky, whose sisters owned a manor in Lopasna. The widow of Alexander Sergeevich, along with the children, often visited these places.

The coldest month is January (about -10 ... -15 ° С), hot - July + 23 ... -26 ° C. The best time to visit is from the end of April to the end of October.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Chekhov

In the city itself, the main attraction is the estate of Pushkin-Lansky Lopasnya-Zachatyevskoe, in which lived noble families of nobility, relatives of the great Russian poet. Here the children and grandchildren of Alexander Sergeevich stayed, his widow Natalia Nikolayevna constantly lived with her new husband. Today in this cozy mansion of the beginning of the 18th century there is a museum where you can enjoy the interiors decorated according to the "latest fashion" of Pushkin's time.

Chekhov Manor - $

The farmstead is in the west of the city, on the right bank of the Lopasnya river. Get there just from the station on the street. Chekhov, then go through the street. Moscow-Soviet, two minutes and you are in place. It's very difficult to get lost, but it's easy to ask the local people for directions. In the center of Chekhov there is a renovated farmstead Sadki, which from the middle of the 19th century belonged to a friend of Anton Pavlovich, Pyotr Mikhailovich Ryumin. At the manor there is the church of John the Baptist, surrounded by an ancient linden park.

Finally, you should take the time to go to the village of Talezh (about 20 km to the southeast). Here is the holy source of the Monk David, to which thousands of pilgrims from all over Russia flock.

Museums

Despite the small size, Chekhov sheltered at once three worthy visits to the museum .The most popular - Museum of letters A .P .Chekhov - is located in the building of the former postal and telegraph office (1896, opened with the assistance of the writer) .Staying for many years in the estate in Melikhov, Anton Pavlovich wrote more than two thousand letters .Inside you can enjoy the old interiors, outside - in the courtyard - the bronze monument of Chekhov by the sculptor M .Anikushin .Opening hours: from 10:00 to 17:00, except Monday .Two other museums are the Museum of Peasant Life and the Chekhov Museum of Remembrance of 1941-1945, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War .

Melikhovo

A + Museum-Reserve .P .Chekhov or simply the estate of Melikhovo tells how the Russian writer and his family lived for more than six years (1892-1899), where he rested, who was invited to visit .The exposition of the museum is a few rooms and utility rooms, which with the caring hands of the staff and the head of the reserve have been preserved almost in the same form as seen by Anton Pavlovich .The museum regularly hosts concerts and festivals, theater and music festivals are organized .Opening hours: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday .In addition, it is worth to examine the wooden church, located near the manor .

The best time to visit the estate is in May, when the Melikhovskaya Spring is held (tickets about 150 rubles) - a week-long theater festival, to which troupes from all over the world are flocking, and the village of Melikhovo becomes an open-air scene.

My homestead is not great, but its surroundings are magnificent.
