Do we understand the Bulgarian language?
Responds information department of "Subtlety of Tourism"
The Bulgarian language belongs to the Slavic group, the southern subgroup. For its written transfer Cyrillic is used, so you can read the signs and announcements without much difficulty. The language itself is also more or less understandable to Russian-speaking citizens. Most of all it reminds Old Slavonic, Church Slavonic. So it's usually possible to understand or at least guess what you are told in the store or at the reception of the hotel. Especially if the interlocutor speaks slowly.
Judge for yourself: "Hello" sounds like "Hello", "Goodbye" will be "Before the Visions", "Thanks" - "Thanks", "Please" - "Mole", "Sorry" - "Sorry". The similarity of the sound of some Russian and Bulgarian words can create funny situations. For example, in Bulgaria you can be offered to sit down at a "table", because this word is translated into Russian as a "chair". And if you are told on the street that you need to go through the "right", do not turn off at all, because the word means "directly."
And always remember (although this does not apply to the language), that the affirmative nod by the Bulgarians means denial and vice versa.
