Lovely, cozy, pretty Cēsis is considered the oldest city in Latvia. Its area is only about 20 square kilometers. km, and the population is slightly more than 18 000 people. How to get
The easiest way to get to Cesis is by rail. Trains from Riga (Riga-Cesis, Riga-Valmiera, Riga-Lugazhi) come here three times a day, the schedule is presented on the website of the Latvian Railways. Every hour from the Riga bus station the bus leaves to Cesis, the journey time is an hour and a half.

A little history
Almost 8-century history of the city is filled with a variety of events, the first mention refers to the year 1206, since the construction of the old castle Venden, by whose name it got its first name. Originally a wooden castle was built on the hill of Riekstukalns, inhabited by its ancient Latvians - the Vendians. Later, the castle was rebuilt from a stone, at one time it was the seat of the masters of the Livonian Order, and was one of the most protected fortresses in the Baltic.
In 1777 Count Sievers acquired a castle and rebuilt many pre-tenement buildings in a new way, well-groomed park, built a brewery nearby. Later the castle was abandoned. Since 1949, the Cesis Historical Museum and exhibition hall are located in the premises of the New Cesis Castle, and the walking paths remind of the former beauty of the park, create a romantic mood.

Vendensky castle, or the castle of Cesis, is the most well-preserved medieval castle in the territory of Latvia, despite numerous reconstructions, and is one of the most interesting tourist objects of the region. The old town is a few narrow streets paved with cobblestone. And on Rigas Street, for example, houses built in the 18th and the first half of the 19th century have survived: No. 16, 24, 15 and 47. The Cesis region is not only beautiful, its nature is curative.
