The resort area of ​​Tuleara (Toliara, Tuléar) in the south-west of the island is remarkable for its desert landscapes, covered with prickly bushes. Tulear itself is a "white city", dusty and deserted, with houses in colonial style, and in combination - the final point of the route on the highway RN7. It is here that the beautiful beaches of St. Augustine and Iphati Bay are located.

How to get to Tulear

In the city there is an airport, where planes land from the capital daily, en route for 1 hour, cost ~ 550,000 MGF. From here you can also fly to Fort Dauphin (in the flight 1 hour, ~ 600,000 MGF) three times a week and up to Morondava (on the way 1, 5 hours, ~ 800,000 MGF).

From the capital of the country, Antananarivo, to Tulear also buses run. The beaches of St. Augustine, Anacao and Beheloks can be reached by boat from La Compagnie du Sud (tel: 94 437 21), the fare from 80 000 MGF. In addition, local boats (so-called pies) swim to the north and south of Tulear.

For travel around the city, it is most convenient to take a taxi, the fare starts from 2000 MGF per person, at night ~ 15,000 MGF. Trading is appropriate.

Beaches of Tulear

In the bay of St. Augustine, which is located to the south of the resort - almost untouched sandy beaches and an interesting coral reef. All hotels on this coast offer diving and snorkelling services.

North of Tulear is the resort area of ​​Ifati (Ifaty), which combines beaches near the villages of Ifati, Mangili and Madio-Rano. Sandy beaches are only in the north of Ifathi. There are also excellent conditions for snorkeling and diving, especially with sharks. In July and August, you can see migrating whales that swim past the canal of Mozambique. In the east of the resort area is the Reniala Nature Reserve, where you can see hundreds of bird species and ancient baobabs.

Itathi is located 22 km north of Tulear. It can be reached by a fixed-route taxi that departs daily from the northern railway station (6: 00-12: 00). The fare is 19 000 MGF, on the way 1 hour. The transfer offered by the hotels will cost 27,000 MGF, the taxi from Tulear - 60,000 MGF.

In the coastal waters of Tuleara stretches a 250-kilometer coral reef. There are 250 species of corals, 750 species of fish, sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, whale sharks and ancient fish species - the coelacanth, which appeared 70 million years ago. This reef is one of the most popular dive sites on the island.
