The fruit of the indefatigable fantasy of the Serbian director Emir Kusturica, the village of Drvengrad - the embodiment of his love for his native land and nostalgia for peaceful times before the Balkan conflict .Sharply experienced the split in the Balkans, the director planned to realize the dream of the ideal village of his childhood, with cozy wooden houses, artless but such touching churches and awkward streets - and for almost ten years now Drvengrad has successfully welcomed tourists who are invited to come here with excursion or live a few days - the whole complex is simultaneously a hotel .

A bit of history
The idea of creating a real Serbian village came to Kusturica in the early 2000s, during the filming of the film "Life as a miracle" .The tape was shot on the nature in front of the Mecavnik hill, and, according to the Emir himself, he often looked to the side of the hill, waiting for the sun to come out and you can continue shooting .Gradually the landscape began to take more and more of the director's thoughts, and after the shooting, construction of the "ethnographic city of the hotel" began here, as Kusturica calls it .In 2004, Drvengrad took the first visitors and immediately became one of the most visited sights of Serbia .By the way, Emir Kusturica lives here, in one of the wooden houses - that's just not always at home, because of the stressful work schedule .
Where to stay
Formally, almost the entire territory of Drvgrad - one big hotel, by the way, the category of "four stars" .In wooden houses are located from one to several rooms, in total there are 50 rooms for guests or, in dry terms, 110 beds .Prices for accommodation are quite acceptable, because the goal of Kusturica is not material profit .At the same time the hotel has everything necessary for comfortable rest: the rooms have a modern bathroom, free Wi-Fi, satellite TV and a minibar with soft drinks made by Kusturica with the ridiculous name "Biorevolution" .There are also four colorful restaurants, a swimming pool and a gym, tennis courts and the Stanley Kubrick cinema .
Among other things, you can stay in the private sector - a cozy room in a picturesque Serbian house can be rented for 8-10 EUR per night.

What to see
Drvengrad is one great attraction, so it's worth to spend the whole day here to see the numerous wooden houses and to admire the amazing atmosphere of the embodied fairy tale. Streets and squares of the village bear the names of famous people - Bergman, Tarkovsky, Fellini, Mikhalkov - and even those who are far from the cinema, but the iconic characters of history: Tesla, Ivo Andric, Diego Maradona, etc., and are honored by Kusturica. In addition to this and in tourist houses there will necessarily be images of celebrities - here you can easily spend the night in the room "Gagarin" or "Che Guevara."
The center of Drvengrad is the square of Nikola Tesla and the church of St. Sava of Serbia, where Kusturica himself adopted Christianity in 2005 (he was born to Islam by birth, but his ancestors were Orthodox). The church clearly resembles the North Russian temples - and not without reason, the Russian northern canon was taken as a basis. Here in the square you can see a collection of retro cars, including the "old" Trabant in the films of Kusturica and the black Volga donated by Nikita Mikhalkov.
The city can not be without a prison - and Drvengrad was no exception. "Hradsky Gate" provides a table and shelter for two major international criminals, according to the Emir, George Bush and Javier Solana, who "peep" because of the prison bars. Well, the postscript of "... humanism and renaissance" inspires faith in repentance and correction.
One of the most unusual places in the village is the underground cinema Stanley Kubrick. For this architectural project, Emir Kusturica won the Philip Rothier Prize in 2005.
The main house of Drvengrad is the house of Kusturica itself. On the first floor, the maestro himself dwells, and the attic and attic attic are rented out to tourists, so you have all the chances to directly "energize" the master's inspiration.
Also, it's worth to visit the extensive library located at No. 6 on Drvengrad's main street, where you can read any of almost ten thousand books, not only in Serbian but also in Russian.
Surroundings of Drvengrad
In eight kilometers from the village there is a small ski resort - several trails, nothing more. The merit of the creation, it is not difficult to guess, belongs to Emir Kusturica, so that guests are not bored in the winter.
From the railway station of Mokry Gory there is a route of the picturesque Sharganskaya Eight - about five trains a day in the warm season, in the winter the road is closed. The train passes through numerous tunnels in the rocks and winds, climbing the mountains. But even if you do not succeed in driving by rail, be sure to visit the station - old steam locomotives and wagons with original finishes stand on the tracks. Photos Drvengrad (5)
