160 km north of Damascus is the third largest city in the country, Homs, famous for the mosque of Ibn al-Walid with two minarets and the tomb of this legendary Arab commander. Homs is located on the Orontes River, which divides the city into two parts: the eastern, which is a strip of plain stretching to the irrigation canal of Homs, and the western one with more modern buildings.
For the first time Homs is mentioned about 2300 BC. e. During the Roman Empire, the city was called Emesa, in biblical times - Kadesh. Christianity in Ames was widespread in the 3-7 centuries, and from 636 Emes was conquered by the Arabs, who gave the city its modern name.
How to get to Homs
There are two bus stations in the city: a new one for minibuses, which is 8 km from the city center on the road to Damascus; and the main station Karajat Pullman, located at 2, 5 km on the street Hama road. You can get to Karajat Pullman by taxi for 30 SYP, to a new remote station for 50 SYP.
From the main bus station buses are sent by Al-Ahliah and Kadmous, as well as smaller private companies. From Homs to Damascus, you can drive for 2 hours and 80 SYP, Haliba - 3 hours m 90 SYP, Tartus - 1 hour and 45 SYP. In addition, there are buses to Hama, but it's easier to catch a minibus.
Sharia al-Korniche Railway Station is a 20-minute walk from the city center, and can be reached by taxi for 30 SYP. From Homs, trains go by a new modern branch to the south, to Damascus (1st / 2nd class 120/60 SYP) and to the north, to Aleppo (120/60 SYP).
