The old town of Bizerte is a labyrinth of narrow streets and buildings of sand and ocher tones, where mosques, tombs of saints, houses, shops and workshops are located. And yet there are a lot of cats, struggling in the "fishing" field in the numerous houses of sailors. Attractions of the medina are the Great Mosque of 17th with an octagonal minaret, the tomb of St. Sidi-Mokhtar and the street of blacksmiths (rue de Forgerons), rich in tiled ornamentation, black from the scale, and here and there a glowing cousin.

Kasba Fortress and Spanish The fort is located at the northern end of the old city. Kasbah was laid in the 6th century, and the present species acquired during the Ottoman rule (17th c). Inside is the kasba Mosque - a massive building with 30 stone columns and 20 domes. Nearby is a small fortress - "ksiba", containing the Oceanological Museum and a nice cafe on the roof. The imposing Spanish fort was built in 16 during the reign of the Algerian dynasty, after the expulsion of the Spaniards (hence the slightly wrong name).

It is imperative to climb to the very top of the modern amphitheater inside the fortress walls to enjoy magnificent views of the bay, new "city and the port of Bizerte.

Wonderful examples of French colonial architecture, built in the period 1920-1930-ies, you can see in the center of the" new "city. Elegant white facades, stained glass windows and wooden shutters, as well as exquisite stucco - here is a portrait of the familiar French mansion in Bizerte. On one of the buildings there is a half-worn inscription of the World War II - abri-public.

Bizerte is the most Russian city of Tunisia: in 1920 it was here that 34 ships of the Russian Imperial Navy came to the last berth.

Russian sights Bizerte

Russian history Bizerte started after the revolution and civil war . In 1920-1921, parts of the Russian Imperial Navy came here - a total of 34 ships and about 6000 sailors and their families . Having overcome a long quarantine and bureaucratic procedures , Russian sailors began to gradually enter the Franco-Tunisian society, preserving their own traditions - built an Orthodox church, created a Russian community and a cultural center . Among the arrivals with the first ships was the later head of the Russian diaspora Anastasia Shirinskaya-Manstein (died in 2009 ) . Today you can visit her house-museum, where the environment of the noble house of pre-revolutionary Russia was recreated, many photographs and documents of that epoch, interior and clothing items are presented, there is an extensive collection of materials about The Imperial Navy and the life of seamen in Bizerte .

Alexander Nevsky Temple with five blue glazes is one block from the house-museum, on the square of Anastasia Shirinskaya. Inside - ship icons of the early 20th century and modern works, a simple iconostasis, Andrew's banner and the banner of Russia. On holidays services are held. The last shelter of sailors is a Christian cemetery in the western part of Bizerte, where Shirinskaya is also buried.
