The Tbilisi Metro in 1966 was the fourth in the list of subways built in the Soviet Union. The first three were Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev. Thus, according to the idea of Soviet engineers and workers, Tbilisi was to be the fourth largest city in the USSR.

However, contrary to all expectations and predictions of experienced experts, neither at the time of the opening of the underground in the Georgian ASSR, nor at the time of the first years of its existence, Tbilisi has never managed to become a city of a million people, in which, according to plan, metro-subways were built. $

Nevertheless, 2,500 workers and designers who worked to create the metro, successfully put into operation two underground branches, built a little more than two dozen stations and calmed down.

At the beginning of the metro, turnstiles friendlyly accepted iron tokens, but then, using modern technologies, managed to equip them with reading aids for plastic cards.

After a fairly long lull in Georgia, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to date, the subway, like the whole country, is beginning to come to life. As evidenced by the increasing passenger traffic in the Tbilisi metro and the gradual construction of new stations. So, as of the end of 2012, three additional stations were in the metro station of Georgia in the stage of active construction.

The total length of the subway is just over 26 kilometers of the railway. It should be noted that each station in the Tbilisi metro is designed to receive 5-car trains, however, on each of the branches at the moment, 3 and 4-component underground trains run (real kids for residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg).

Opening hours

The subway in Georgia operates from six in the morning until midnight. The shortest intervals between the trains are observed at rush hour and range from one and a half to two minutes. In the least active hours, traffic does not go more than once every 12-15 minutes.

The fare is

The journey to the subway costs 2 lari, which is about 36 rubles. It should be noted that the cost of travel in the subway is much higher than in the rest of the transport, since in a fixed-route taxi the trip will cost slightly less than 1 GEL, in the bus - 0, 5, on the cable car - 1 GEL. However, anyway, the trip in the Tbilisi metro is not so hard to hit, as if a Russian tourist was in the subway of New York.
