The monastery of the Augustinian hermits (hermitians) in Freiburg is worth visiting for several reasons. Firstly, it is an ancient monastery, it is more than 700 years old. Secondly, here are preserved the ancient parts of the building, including a gallery around the courtyard of the monastery. Thirdly, there is one of the best and probably the most unique museum in the region - the Augustinian Museum, dedicated to the Augustinian monastic order, regional history and church art.

The Augustinian monastic order received permission to found a monastery here in the late 13th century, and they were allocated a piece of land for this purpose - right on the so-called Salt Road (on it, accordingly, they brought salt - it was the largest trade road of the city). The building of the monastery was built a little later - at the beginning of the next, 14th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was rebuilt in the Baroque style, and at the end of the 18th century the monastery was closed. Then there was a city theater, and now there is a museum.

The Augustinian Museum is quite unique - there are very few museums of monastic orders in all, and this is also a very large and rich collection.

Unlike many other German monasteries, there are preserved original buildings . The building has recently been renovated, it is very interesting to combine the preserved historical buildings and modern design - in general, it is necessary to come only to see how it can look . Inside are the old parts , in the center - internally courtyard surrounded by a gothic inner gallery . Preserved internal monastic church decorated in baroque style . Here you can see the altar, sculptures, paintings and many carved items . In some parts of the rear created modern exhibition halls .

The building is mostly filled with a museum collection, and this is what is really worth seeing . Museums of monastic orders are generally scarce, and in this there is also a very large and rich collection . In addition to the items belonging to this particular monastery, there is an exhibit s from the whole region . The collection covers the period from the 8th to the 18th century, and separately the collection of 19th century paintings is placed . Rarest sculptures, carpets and tapestries, a large collection of gold and silver items (including things placed here from the treasury of the Freiburg cathedral), architectural elements, collections of stained glass - everything is .

The most famous part of the museum is a collection of books, drawings and prints, there are about 70 thousand exhibits, including ancient ones handwritten books. They are not always displayed, but when exposed - can not be torn off.

Interesting, bright museum, one of the most curious and rare in the region. Good and the collection, and some particularly famous exhibits, such as, for example, Maltererteppich - a unique carpet of the 14th century. The exposition is constantly changing - the funds are large here.
