History and culture
Originating as a settlement no later than 4000 to n .e ., Corinth has more than once become the main business center of the eastern Mediterranean .This was facilitated by its geographical position - the city not only controlled the movement through the isthmus, but also organized the fiber for ships between the Ionian and Aegean Seas..Corinth was famous for its ceramics and fabrics .It was here that the most magnificent of the classical Greek architecture styles was formed .The wealth and lavish way of life of its residents are even reflected in the famous saying "Not everyone is allowed to visit Corinth" .
Presumably in 50 AD. e. the apostle Paul arrived in Corinth. Having lived in the city for a year and a half, he founded a Christian community, which subsequently devoted two of his messages to the New Testament. In the year 58 the apostle Paul returns to his flock again and writes here a message to the Romans.
After liberation from the Turkish yoke, in 1833, Corinth, due to its strategic position and historical significance, was regarded as one of the candidates for the status of the capital of Greece, but was "defeated" by Athens. At present, Corinth is a large industrial and hub transport center.

Ancient Corinth
The largest landmark of the city - the Temple of Apollo, dating from the 6th century BC, rises above the ruins of the Roman agora, or shopping arcades. The Holy Spring and the tribune, or Bema, deserve special attention in the open area of the northern part of the agora. It was on this structure that the apostle Paul stood, when he had to defend himself and the Christian faith before the proconsul of Corinth Gallio.
Within the ranks are also the ruins of Pirenia, the main source of drinking water, named for the mythological heroine, who, according to legend, after her grandson's death in the mountain, shed so many tears that it turned into a source. To the north-west of it is located the Theater, in the era of August, its lower tier was rebuilt and used to conduct gladiatorial fights. Further, to the north are the ruins of the sanctuary of Asclepius and the source of Lerne, known as Asklepion - a complex dedicated to the art of healing and the god-healer Asklepius.
The Archaeological Museum operates on the territory. In summer, access for visitors is open from 8.00 to 20.00, in winter - from 8.00 to 15.00. Entrance to the territory - € 6 - includes a ticket for the museum (as of May 2011).
