How to get
By train
Two direct trains depart daily from Athens to Kalambaka (the journey time is 4, 5 hours, the ticket price, depending on the class - from € 15 to € 42) and several trains with a transfer in Paleofarsalos (from 4, 5 to 10 hours, tickets from € 25 to € 43).
Thessaloniki and Kalambaka are connected by one direct train (3 hours en route, ticket - € 12 or € 18), there are also variants with transfer.
By bus
Buses from Athens depart from Terminal B to Trikala, and then to Kalambaka. The journey time is 4, 5 hours, the ticket price is € 24. Departure time: from 7.30 to 15.30 every 2 hours, 17.00 (only Friday and Saturday), 21.00 (timetable and cost of tickets are given in May 2011).
On auto
By car from Athens can be reached in about 4 hours along the route: Athens - Lamia - Domokos - Karditsa - Trikala - Kalambaka (357 km).

To Meteor Monasteries
Buses to the village of Kastraki leave from the stop next to the fountain Plateia Dimarhiou every 45 minutes, two of them (at 9.00 and 13.30 on weekdays, and at 8.20 and 13.20 on weekends) follow further to the Monastery of Megalo Meteoro (in May 2011). There, in front of the fountain, there are usually taxi drivers who will take you to any of the Meteor monasteries. You can rent a car, moped or bicycle in the city.
Shopping and restaurants
In the mornings on Fridays, there is a lively market on the central square - you can buy anything here, from olives and nuts to silk scarves and warm gloves.In the city a good choice of traditional restaurants and cafes of different price category, most of them located on the main street.
Entertainment, Excursions and Attractions of Kalambaka
Kalambaka Museum is located on the outskirts of the city, on the way to Kastraki and monasteries. The exposition is devoted to the daily life of rural Greece, complemented by its collection of photographs exhibited on the second floor of the museum.
The Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was erected in the 12th century on the site of early Christian basilicas of the 5th-6th centuries, and was repeatedly rebuilt. The temple is decorated with unusual frescoes of the 14th century.
In the newspaper booths of the city you can buy a brochure "The Footpaths of Meteora", compiled by Antonis Kalogir. The book contains a detailed description of five routes, including monasteries open to visitors, paths to some of the ruined monasteries and other interesting objects of the Meteor neighborhood.
