Ayyubid Castle, towering above the village of Ajlun, is famous for the fact that it was with its help eight centuries ago that the crusaders were defeated. This Ajlun castle (Kal'at al-Rabad), located on the top of the mountain, was built in 1184 by one of the generals of Saladin, in order to protect the iron mines and protect the city from attacks.

From the top of the castle there are stunning views of the valley of the Jordan River.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Ajluna

Ajlun Castle is one of the best preserved examples of Arab-Muslim medieval military architecture. Its distinctive features are a dry ditch, a lifting bridge leading to the main entrance, well fortified gates with decorative stone pigeons, a massive southern tower. Inside the castle is a maze of vaulted aisles, spiral staircases, ramps, dining halls, stables, as well as private chambers of the castle administrator.

Initially, the castle had four towers with loopholes for archers, and was surrounded by a trench 16 meters wide and 15 meters deep. In 1215 the Mamluks governor Aibak-ibn-Abdullah expanded the castle, adding another tower on the southeast corner and erecting a bridge decorated with pigeon figurines, which can still be seen today.

In Ajlun there is also the temple of Al-Khadir (St. George). Among other sacred places - the birthplace of the prophet Elijah in Listib and the church of Elijah the prophet in Hirbet-Mar-Ilyas. Nearby is the tomb of the esteemed companion of the Prophet Muhammad Ikrim-ibn-Abi-Jahal.

In the vicinity of Ajlun there are also a lot of places worth visiting. For example, the stunning nature reserve, along which there are two tourist routes. Here you can stay for the night right on the territory of the reserve, in chalet houses.

In the village of Tubna, you should see the Zeidani Mosque, the meeting hall of 1750, and the Al'ali Shreyd Palace, the former residence of the local governor. An interesting ancient settlement in the village of Zubia, which to this day is called the "monastery" - here are the ruins of the Byzantine church. In addition, several houses and stables have survived in these places, the age of which is several centuries.
