In 1960, the Moroccan dirham (the international three-letter code MAD, the designation Dh) became the official currency of the Kingdom of Morocco. He came to replace the Moroccan franc, which was circulating until 1974. In turn, the franc, the main currency of Morocco from 1921 to 1957, replaced the Moroccan rial, which was the main means of settlement from 1882 to 1921.
The dirham consists of 100 centimes. In circulation there are coins of santima with a face value of 5, 10 and 20, dirhams with a face value of 0.5 (actually 50 centimes), 1, 2, 5, 10. Paper notes are issued: 20, 50, 100 and 200 dirhams. Exchange money from other countries to Moroccan can only be in the Kingdom, Dirham currency is not convertible. But the rate is uniform throughout the territory, the state is strictly following it.
