Transylvania begins in Brasov: there are wooded mountains, gloomy Gothic churches and inaccessible castles. The old city center is clamped by mountains in a narrow valley, it retains all the attributes of the medieval city - these are houses with tiled roofs, and narrow streets, and stunning views from the surrounding mountains. At one time the city managed to visit Kronstadt (with the Germans), and Brasso (with the Hungarians) and even Stalin (you know at whom)

The information tourist center of Brasov is located in the main square, in the Town Hall building. There is also a historical museum and an interesting exposition.

How to get to Brasov

There is no own airport near the city (however it promises to be in 2012), the nearest one is in Bucharest (3 hours by car) or Sibiu (the same 3 hours).

The easiest way to get to the city by train. From the capital of the country to Brasov 19 trains per day (the most comfortable trains - InterCity or IC, three departures a day). The most inconvenient and slow trains are Personal (or simply P), which go to Brasov four times a day. In addition, a lot of international trains run from the Czech Republic, Hungary or Slovakia (for more information, see here).

In the vicinity of Brasov, the ski resort Poiana Brasov (12 km), Predeal (27 km), Bran (30 km), Rysnov (20 km), Prezhmer, Fagarash and others are interesting. You can get to these places, usually from Autogara 2 bus station or Bartolomeu area, or Stadionul Municipal.

Money

To exchange money is best in large banks: BCR, BNR, BT (Bank of Transylvania) or Raiffeisen. They accept the world's major currencies - EUR, US or Canadian dollars, British pounds, the staff is very friendly and speaks English. You must have a passport or driver's license with you.

If the banks are closed, you can exchange money in small exchange offices, of which there are many on the main pedestrian highway of Brasov - Republicii street. However, it is worthwhile to be attentive - they can cheat, deceive, and so on and so forth.

Transport Brasov

In the role of public transport are buses, trolleybuses (only about 40 routes) and taxis. The fare is ~ 1, 5 RON, on route number 20, which follows to Poiana Brasov - 3, 5 RON. Passage for all types of transport per day (except taxis and No. 20) - 5 RON, a week - 25 RON, 10 days - 35 RON (using a travel card, you must have a passport or any ID card).

Tickets must be purchased before landing in special kiosks and composted directly in the cabin. The fine is 100-200 RON. The only inconvenience, ticket sales kiosks are not at all stops (and some also work hours fail), so you'll have to look for the nearest supermarket or newsstand.

Moving around the historical center is easiest to walk: all major attractions are within walking distance. You can get to the hotel by taxi, the fare is small, ~ 1, 5 RON per km.

Convenient parking is available in the very center of the city, on Eroilor Boulevard (1, 5 RON per hour, all for free), and throughout the city. From this same boulevard begins a major pedestrian street of the city, leading directly to the heart of the old city - Republicii street. It is home to most of the city's restaurants, cafes and shops.

Brasov hotels

Perhaps the most pleasant place to stay is not in the city itself, but in Poiana-Brasov-a ski resort 15 minutes from the center. In winter, you can see not the most picturesque lines on the ski lift from skiers, in summer, on the way, - silence, mountains, deserted streets and small hotels-chalets. In addition, Poiana is located halfway to the castles in Bran and Rysnov.

Bran - Dracula's Castle

Bran is Romania's most touristic castle, better known as Dracula's castle. In fact, the real Dracula has little to do with him: once he spent the night here (according to another legend, he spent a couple of months in prison there). In reality, this castle is the summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, the great-granddaughter of the British Queen Victoria. Currently, there is a museum of history and medieval art: furniture, collections of weapons and armor, as well as other interesting items of the 14-19 centuries.
