Carthage hotels

The number of rooms in Carthage is very modest - the unique character of this place affects and the impossibility of building hotels. Restaurants and Cafes of Carthage

To sit under a table in the shade of a palm tree to refresh yourself with a glass of juice or to refresh yourself with something more significant is possible in the institutions located on both sides of Habib Bourguiba Avenue that runs parallel to the shore line (and slightly away from the water) across the entire Carthage .There are not so many of them, since the land is literally worth its weight in gold and is won mainly by villas .You can go, for example, in the cafe Yam's (station Carthage Dermech and just go down to the sea) - here they serve tasty "lavazza" and desserts .Across the road is the Monoprix supermarket, where you can take water, a "dry ration" or a slice of pizza for takeaway .For lunch, it's worth looking into the Neptune restaurant, which is on the other side of the ruins of the Carthage Hannibal quarter .For dinner haute cuisine with a View On The Sea go to Villa Dido - a boutique hotel, restaurant and bar under one roof..Prices (25-40 TND for main courses) are determined by the strategic position of the establishment: you have the whole of Carthage, the Presidential Palace and the white-and-blue Sidi Bu - $ .

Shopping and Stores

In addition to the usual postcards-magnets-charms in Carthage like to sell all sorts of Phoenician-Roman fake: coins, pieces of columns and stellas, images of Tanit and Baal-Ammon, mosaics, clay lamps and other artificially aged replica .Of course, no such value does not represent any value - the things will serve as a souvenir about visiting Carthage .Accordingly, all this "wealth" in no way can cost more than 3-5 TND .Trade mercilessly and laugh at the merchants who are trying to sell you the pumice stone of Emperor Antoninus Pius, who supposedly he personally rubbed his heels directly in the neighborhoods of his name .

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Carthage

Termini Antonina - one of the largest resort complexes of the time, inferior in size only to the Roman terms of Caracalla and Diocletian. From its former greatness there were few - mostly underground rooms, bearing structures and ceilings. You can imagine the scale of the construction by looking at the thermal model installed on the observation platform. The only column that once supported the vault of the cold hall, the frigidarium, was restored to full size in order to give an idea of the height of the building.

The most ambiguous place among all the ruins of Carthage is Tophet, an altar-burial in the open air .According to the generally accepted version, here the Phoenicians sacrificed their first-born to propitiate the formidable gods Baal-Ammon and Tanith .Urns with ashes were placed in several rows, and above them rose funeral stellas, which can be seen today .The most famous stele, which is believed to represent a priest holding a sacrificed infant, is today in the National Museum of Bardo .By the way, there are also justifying versions: in place of Tophet there could be a children's cemetery, where dead children were already burned before the funeral, or they sacrificed here the gods of premature or dead children .

In addition, in Carthage is worth a visit to the Roman amphitheater for 36 thousand spectators, water tanks for the Maalga and the remains of the aqueduct, going to Carthage from the Water Temple in Zaguan (132 km). You can get an idea about the residential development of Carthage by visiting the Roman villas quarter and the Punon quarter of Magon.

The hill of Birsa, from where Carthage once began, is interesting. At the top of the hill stands a cathedral in honor of Louis the Saint, who died here in the 13th century from the plague during the Eighth Crusade. The Carthage Museum with a magnificent collection of artifacts is located side by side with the cathedral.

A single ticket to visit all the attractions of Carthage costs 9 TND and is valid for one day. Opening hours are from 8:30 to 17:00 from mid-September to the end of March and from 8:00 to 19:00 from April to mid-September. Visits to the Oceanographic Museum and St. Louis Cathedral are paid separately - 1 TND and 3 TND respectively.
