Thinking of Belgium to mind, as a rule, come the "three pillars of local tourism" - this is Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp. In that case, you should think again - and you will remember about Ghent. This city is a unique architectural ensemble, in the center of which is the Cathedral of St. Bavo (16th century) with exquisite paintings and stained-glass windows. It is in it that the famous masterpiece of Jean Van Eyck's "Worship of the Lamb" is kept. And Ghent is famous for its cheerful student life, the abundance of pubs, excellent museums and the cozy atmosphere of a medieval town.

The most convenient way to get to Ghent by train. The main railway station is named after St. Peter - St Pietersstation. From Sint-Pieters station, trains run every 30 minutes to Antwerp (8-10 EUR, 45 minutes), Bruges (5-7 EUR, 20 minutes), Brussels (8-10 EUR, 45 minutes), Kortrijk (6-8 EUR, 20 minutes) and Ostend (8-10 EUR, 50 minutes), and every hour in Oudenaarde (4-5 EUR, 35 minutes) and Ypres (10 EUR, one hour).

Kitchen and restaurants

Belgium is famous for its beer, and Gent, I think, is no exception. In search of authentic pubs, direct your feet to St. Petersburg Square. Veerleplein (before the castle), St. Jacob's church (especially on weekends) or in the student quarter around Blandijnberg, near the School of Art and Philosophy, which is easily recognized by the 64-meter Art Deco Library Tower.

That it is possible to advise: «at students» glance on street Overpoortstraat with 34 bars of all colors and the sizes. At nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Sodom and Gomorrah are going on here, because on Tuesday teachers do not let them down - after which young minds rest for two nights in a row. The most famous institutions are Decadance (house, techno, drum & bass), Boom Boom (old good rock and roll), Den Drummer (rock and metal), Twieoo (new wave), Cuba Libre (or Puta Libre from R & B). Nearby are the Porter House (Stalhof 1) and Plan B, a typical quiet bar with a medieval atmosphere and charming views over the river (Verlorenkost 17).

Belgium is famous for its beer, and Gent, I think, is no exception. In search of authentic pubs, direct your feet to St. Petersburg Square. Veerleplein.

We go further: in the center, near the castle, waiting - will not wait for their revelers Waterhuis aan de Bierkant at Groentenmarkt 9 - an exceptionally tourist place, but here they pour as much as 400 varieties of Belgian beer .Het Galgenhuis nearby also offers a large selection of draft and bottled beer, but in a quieter environment .'t Dreupelkot on Groentenmarkt 12 - it's 200 varieties of "Enevera" (local vodka) .Specialists headless and persistent worth trying pepper (if that, we warned you!) The cost of about 2 EUR per glass .Another notable place - Hot Club de Gand (Schuddevisstraatje - Groentenmarkt 15b), known for its cozy atmosphere and jazz concerts .Which with no less periodicity are held in Damberd, that in Korenmarkt Square .

Near the church of St. James, you can recommend Charlatan (Vlasmarkt 6), where live performances are held; Jos (Vlasmarkt 7), Bar des Amis (Vlasmarkt 5), Kinky Star (Vlasmarkt 9), 't Begin Van' t Einde (Vlasmarkt 14) and a bar with the uncomplicated name Video (Oude Beestenmarkt 7). All of them lead a regular "concert life."

Something special is worth looking for in the pub Herberg De Dulle Griet (Vrijdagmarkt 50). Local beer is very strong, rich and quite refined. For example, you can try Guillotine (9.3%), Delirium Tremens (9.5%) and the most "strong" Ghent beer with the talking name Piraat (10.5%).
