High-mountain Tibet, which is formally a special administrative district of China, has been considered a sacred place for Buddhists and Hindus for many centuries: there are a huge number of monasteries, spiritual schools and "places of power". The local mountain Kailash is referred to in the ancient scrolls as the center of the world, and for good reason: its top is taken at once by the four largest rivers, including the Indus and Brahmaputra.

The capital is Lhasa.

For a very long time, until 1984, Tibet was closed to foreigners.

Entry rules

All tourists - not the Chinese should get special permission to visit the area from the Tourism Bureau of Tibet and every day be accompanied by a licensed guide. Get an individual permission is almost impossible, with group (from 5 people) things are simpler. In addition to this, periodically entering Tibet territory for foreigners is prohibited at all - such periods can last a month or more.

How to get

In the Tibetan capital, Lhasa can be reached by an internal flight from any major city in the country - however this can be strongly recommended to tourists with poor health due to a sharp drop in altitudes. Among the more sparing routes are the popular tourist route Kunming - Dali - Liyang with a gradual increase in altitude and the subsequent flight to the capital of Tibet.

From Beijing to Lhasa, you can also arrive by train from the Qinghai Railway: such a journey will last about 2 days. Finally, you can get to Tibet on a rented car or as part of an organized tour, usually in jeeps.

The cuisine of Tibet is

In Tibet in the first place is always spiritual food, and only then - bodily. However, nobody will be left hungry here anyway. Tibetan food consists mainly of vegetables and meat (the most popular is yak meat), and the amount of spices and spices is minimal, only salt, onions and garlic. The most popular dishes of Tibetan cuisine are lamb sausages and dried beef.

Inhabitants of Tibet practically do not eat sweet and fruit, the only sweetness that you can really find here is brushwood with honey. To alcohol, the Tibetans too are pretty cool, because it does not combine with prayer. But a weak rice wine here can still be bought.

Tea, by the way, is often preferred to drink with oil and salt.

One of the main dishes of Tibetan cuisine is tsampa, which is prepared from egg flour, yak butter, tea and barley beer. In addition, it is worth trying shadpu and yerch cheese - churu.

In the large cities of Tibet and some hotels, where tourists often stop for lunch, the choice of dishes is usually quite varied. In other places, everything is usually arranged much more ascetic - the menu is often limited to Momo and Tukpe. Momo is similar to dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetables, and tukpa - soup noodles with meat or vegetables. There are also a number of dishes from rice and vermicelli.

Attractions in Tibet

If you managed to come to Tibet, but you did not manage to get a free month for sightseeing, it's better to make a clear plan in advance - there are so many sights here that on arrival just eyes run up.

In Lhasa on Red Mountain built a beautiful white stone Potala Palace, called the Mystic Mountain. It looks quite impressive - as if the mountain itself, shaking off the snow cover, turned to the palace. Its height is 115 meters, 13 floors, the total area of which is more than 130 thousand square meters. Few will manage to visit all the rooms of the palace, there are more than a thousand of them and each is surprisingly luxuriously decorated. The palace is served by monks who support the palace in a clean and orderly manner.

Not far from Lhasa is the city of Gyantse, which has preserved the Tibetan atmosphere due to the fact that one of the latter was influenced by China. This is the third largest city in Tibet.

Norbulingka, a park complex with summer palaces, the Dalai Lam is a great place for unhurried walks, meditations and meditations. The palace is open from noon to noon. On the territory of the complex there is an artificial lake, and near the palace is the eponymous zoo.

Jokhang Temple, the famous Buddhist pilgrimage site, was built in the 7th century to place relics there - the image of Buddha Akshobya and Jovo Sakyamuni. These relics were brought along with the dowry of two wives of King Sronzen Gampo, Nepalese and Chinese princesses. Both relics can be seen in the temple from 8 am to noon. Before the gates of the temple, Tibetans perform prostrations, in the same place, in the square there is a basement, where a thousand candles burn. The temple is functioning, there are daily services here.

In addition, you can visit the monastery of Sera and the monastery of Drepung and make a ritual detour around the lakes of Manasarovar. The high mountain lake Yamdrok is one of the most mysterious lakes in Tibet, known for its magical properties.

One of the properties is just the change of the color of the water in the lake - no matter how many you go there, it will always be different.

Sacred Mount Kailas

Another Tibetan relic, which is of natural origin - Mount Kailas .It has a pyramidal shape, its faces are directed almost exactly to the sides of the world, at the top is a snow cap .On the southern side of the mountain once there was a vertical crack, which is roughly crossed horizontally in the middle, resulting in a figure resembling a swastika .Four world religions consider Kailas a sacred place .Here you can make a bark - a ritual bypass .It is believed that, even going around the mountain just once (and that's as much as 53 kilometers), a person gets rid of all life sins .Travel time takes from one to three days, there are a lot of interesting sights around the mountain, and the sight is beautiful .And do not forget to make a wish, before you go to the bark .
