Road signs
A tourist who has rented a car will have to get used to the bilingualism of the Greek road signs for a while (all the inscriptions on the road signs in Greece are made in two languages - Greek and English). It will be good to learn how the letters of the Greek alphabet are read. In case you are looking for a road and asking someone from the locals, you will better understand their explanations if you know how the names of places on the map sound in Greek.
As an inquisitive tourist, learn to notice brown road signs with yellow letters from a distance: they are marked with places of archaeological and cultural interest.
Motorcycles and mopeds
The presence of a helmet while driving a motorcycle or moped is a prerequisite in Greece, and in the event of a violation of this rule, you will be fined. In addition, the quality of Greek roads leaves much to be desired, and the roads themselves (especially on the islands) are rather narrow, so a protective helmet is not an excessive security measure. Take into account the statistics: most foreigners die on the roads of Greece just behind the wheel of mopeds and motorcycles.
Rent a car
Traffic on the roads of Greece is quite lively: drivers do not observe the division into lanes on the road, they often give deafening audible signals, hurry to park, etc. Be very careful, especially at night and on one-way roads.
In Athens, experts advise not to get behind the wheel at all: in addition to the above problems, it is difficult to find signs with names of streets in the Greek capital - they are located high on buildings, then hidden behind a tree - and you can be deceived by the very intertwining of Athenian streets. It is better to take advantage of a well-developed public transport system: metro, bus or tram.
In rural areas, roads are dotted with potholes, and they often encounter animals that have strayed from the herd, which creates additional difficulties for driving. In addition, you (or, more likely, your children) can rock on a mountain road, so make small stops for rest during the journey.
Check that the car is insured: small firms often do not insure their vehicles.
Find a gas station in Greece - no problem. According to the law, at least one gas station should be open in every region of Greece at night and on Sunday. However, driving a car in this country can fly you a pretty penny, since Greek gasoline is quite expensive.
