What does St. Petersburg and the town of Zaandam have in common, what in the Netherlands? Climate, channels? All this, and the name of Peter the Great. It was in this city on the river Zaan that the Russian autocrat, modestly called Peter Mikhailov, learned the basics of the ship business. But not only does this make the Zaandam interesting for tourists, they also want to see here the living corner of the history of the Netherlands, the ethnographic village of Zanes-Schans, near it.

How to get to Zaandam

If you want to get to Zaandam, passing Amsterdam, immediately from the airport Schiphol, then you need trains such as Sprinter, going every half hour to Horn. The trip to them to their destination will take 20 minutes and cost 4 EUR. Trains of other types will require a transfer from you. But the journey from Amsterdam is not fraught with any difficulties. Zaandam - the second stop of the train from the Central Station of the capital, direct trains from it depart literally every 10 minutes.

Zaandam - the second stop of the train from the Central Station of the capital, direct trains from it depart literally every 10 minutes.

Already after 10-15 minutes, paying 2.30 EUR (ticket to the first class of cars is 3.90, but is there any point to spend on such a short trip?), You will arrive to the place. You can take the train to Zaandam at Sloterdijk station (near the metro station with the same name, "Sloterdijk"). In this case, you need to leave at the next stop. Your trip will be even more rapid and will cost exactly 2 EUR.

If you boarded a Sprinter train, then you can also get to Zanes-Schans. To do this, you need to drive 2 more stops from Zaandam and get off at Koog-Zaandijk station (pronounced Koog-Zaandik). This takes 5 more minutes and 2 EUR. Specify the type of train here.

Connexxion buses No. 92 and No. 94 leave from the bus station in Amsterdam (it is to the left of the train station) and take you to the center of Zaandam (Peperstraat stop) or to the local train station. From the same metropolitan bus station go direct buses to Zanes-Schans, the number of their route is 91, the journey time is about 40 minutes.

The most romantic and expensive way to get to Zanes-Schans is water. You can hire a boat in Amsterdam and this pleasure will cost from 50 EUR per hour.

How to navigate and move around in the city

At the train station in Zaandam or in Zanes-Schans, you can see automata with maps of the towns .Take, do not hesitate, they are free and very detailed .To get to them to the main sights is very simple .However, it's difficult to get lost even without a map .For example, there are signposts everywhere from Koog-Zaandik to Zanes-Schans, so you can easily pass east from the railway station past the chocolate factory (smell crazy!) To the end of Stationsstraat, then turn left, then right at the intersection, and then through river on the bridge .Everything, you have reached the goal, to tell longer than to go .If, however, the walking route does not seem attractive, follow the signs to the free ferry that will bring you to Zanes-Schans .Well, in Zaandem to the main city attractions in general, traces of blue, laid out directly on the pavement bridge .

Cuisine and restaurants of Zaandam

It's hard not to get hungry for a day of walking through fresh air at the Zanes-Schans Museum .The administration of the park took into account this and in the village there are several cafes and restaurants where visitors can eat .At your service De Hoop op d'Swarte Walvis, De Kraai and the cafe at the Zaans Museum, where tea and coffee are served with excellent pastries, and a wonderful view from the window is .And, of course, you can always buy bread at the local bakery, cheese in the local cheese bakery, Albert Hain in the first store - mustard (now this is a giant supermarket chain) and dine with all this splendor right on the grass . In the Zaandam of places where you can eat, too many. Separately I want to highlight Robby's, rock and blues Cafe Fishline, Lapaix and pub "Blacksmith" (Blacksmith), located in the former smithy.

Shopping and shopping

Better places to buy authentic, authentic Dutch souvenirs than Zanse-Schans, you just can not think of .Here at each museum, with each mill - its shop .In them you can buy cheese (where without it!) Made with the old technology, fragrant bread and sweets made in the bakery In den Gecroonde Duyvekater, as well as the delicious local mustard (try with cheese) .Pay attention to clothes and accessories made of hand-woven cloth, ceramic products, dolls and wooden shoes, carved for you, antiques and, of course, models (including ones) of windmills .

Zaandam, Petr I Lodge

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Zaandam

The most interesting tourist site of Zaandam is undoubtedly the Peter I Lodge, where he lived during his two visits .Almost two centuries later, another stone was built over the house, to protect the wooden building from ruthless time .From the city railway station to this museum about 15 minutes walk, entrance fee, 3 EUR from an adult, on weekends there are Russian-language tours .In the center of the city there is a monument to the Russian carpenter .In addition, in Zaandam for 7 EUR you can visit the museum of the city, where you can find pictures, photographs and other exhibits reflecting the history and culture of the region .

Zanes-Schans, open-air ethnographic museum

Zanes-Schans

Having carefully examined the city, it is time to move to the museum under the open sky of Zanes-Schans .Entrance to its territory is free, but for a careful inspection of some objects you will have to pay .Perhaps it would be more profitable not to buy tickets separately for each of the numerous museums in the park (among them the museum of the klops, the clock museum, the flour mill, the sawmill mill and many others), but to purchase a special museum map in the information center for 9 .5 EUR .She gives the right to visit many of them for free, and also provides a discount for some products in local gift shops .But even if you choose to go for a walk in Zanes-Schans, you will not have to miss .The cozy atmosphere of antiquity, beautiful landscapes and windmills, inspired by Claude Monet, will not leave indifferent even the most demanding visitors .

The cost of excursions is indicated in April 2011.
