Braga is the center of the same district, located 50 km north of Porto. This city is considered the center of Catholicism in Portugal, it has been the residence of the archbishop since 1505.

How to get to Braga

The nearest international airport is 10 km from Porto, from there you can reach the city of Braga by bus. Also there is an airport in the capital of Portugal - Lisbon (320 km), the communication is well established.

The city center can be reached in several ways:

  • by train: Braga is at the end of a branch of nine stations passing through the city of Porto, suburban trains follow every hour (1, 95 EUR, about one hour) from Sao Bente Station. Intercidade (IC) trains run from Coimbra (15, 50 EUR, two hours trip, two or three times a day) and from Lisbon (EUR 26, four hours, two or three times a day).
  • on buses: there is a centralized bus station in Braga, which serves as the main regional center. The company Transdev Norte / Arriva sends eight buses a day to Viana do Castelo (3, 60 EUR, 1 ½ hours enroute), Barcelos (2 EUR, one hour en route), Guimarães (2, 50 EUR, 50 minutes en route) and Porto (4 EUR, one hour en route), plus four buses per day to Campo do Gerês (3 EUR, 1 ½ hours on the way). On weekends, the number of flights is halved. Rede Expressos sends buses to Viseu (10, 6 EUR, three hours in transit) and to Lisbon (14, 50 EUR, 4 ½ hours on the way).
  • by taxi: from the nearest airport to the city of Braga can be reached by taxi, but the fare will be relatively high, however, as elsewhere in Europe.
  • By car: By motorway A3 / IP1, the road to Braga from Porto by car will turn into an easy one-day trip. But the route N101 from Braga to Guimarães is more congested and ill-marked on the map.

On the other side of the gardens of St. Barbara is the Archbishop's Palace, which consists of three wings built at different times: the eastern wing is made in the Gothic style, the south and west - in the Baroque style. Today in the Archbishop's Palace there is a regional archive, a university rector's office and the City Library with 300,000 books and 10,000 manuscripts.

There are other equally impressive churches in Braga, for example, Misericordia, built in the style of the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century, Santa Cruz with a rococo façade, Sao Joao de Souto 18 century and the Capela da Conceiçao of the 16th century.

The famous landmark of Braga is 6 km from the city - the Church of Christ on Calvary. The road to it is dotted with chapels, fountains and statues, symbolizing the fourteen stops of Jesus. On the slope of the hill, to the entrance of the church, a zigzag staircase rises, surrounded by gardens from the 15th century, marking the ascent of Christ to the place of his crucifixion.

A walk through Braga

There are many museums in Braga. The Museum of Pius XII is named for the famous pope. The exhibits are the tools of the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age, as well as ceramics of prehistoric and Roman times. In one building with the museum of Pius XII there is a museum of Medina. The museum collection includes about 83 oil paintings, 21 drawings, portraits and landscapes of the artist Enrique Medina.

Enrique Medina is a famous Portuguese artist who was born in Porto in 1901.

The Noguera Museum Da Silva is famous for its collection of items owned by entrepreneur Noguera Da Silva, which he inherited from the University of Minho.
