Obidos is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, it was founded by Celtic tribes. During the Roman Empire, it was even one of the most important ports in the region, later the West-Gothic tribes and Arabs ruled here. And only in the 12th century King Alfonso Henriques once and for all established here Spanish domination. This could not but affect the architectural appearance of the city, which absorbed all the best from these completely different cultures.
Probably nowhere else to find such a cozy and elegant town. Flowers, fruit trees, white villas, paved paths, quiet streets - all this is similar to the scenery of a good children's fairy tale. Perhaps that is why he chose the ball as the place where the most young hearts joined the legitimate bonds of marriage - the ten-year-old heir to the Spanish throne, Alphonse V and his cousin, who was also younger.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Obidusha
In the city is concentrated a huge number of ancient cathedrals with magnificent chapels. The most popular from a tourist point of view is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, where once there was an unusual "child" wedding. And the most ancient and still operating in Obidushe is the Cathedral of St. James, erected in the early 12th century. Nearby is the Church of St. John the Baptist, which attracts tourists with the unusually elegant chapel of St. Martin.
It's hard to believe, but this tiny town, with two streets and a population of no more than ten thousand inhabitants, was once an impregnable fortress, as evidenced even by its name, which translates as "citadel" .But the evidence is the ancient castle Do Castelo, which was erected by the Arabs, and reconstructed by the order of Alfonso Henriques and the severe fortress walls that surround it .They were built later, and more often served as protection against attacks of warlike corsairs, traces from enemy attacks which are permanently imprinted on fortress walls .
Today Do Castelo is one of the seven most outstanding architectural monuments of Portugal. Moreover, on the territory of the castle in the second half of the 20th century a luxurious hotel complex was opened - Pousada Do Castelo, which is one of the first complexes of this type in the country.
It is necessary to cancel one more feature of Obidus: there is not a single natural reservoir with fresh water on its territory, it is extracted with the help of water wells, and the oldest urban water pipe (aqueduct) was built in the 16th century. But at the disposal of residents and visitors of the city there is a whole ocean, to which lead picturesque paths, equipped for walking on bicycles.
Events
In the castle area, various historical festivals, knight tournaments and theatrical performances are often held, during which the sense of real time is lost and you are really transferred to an era when street trade was busily conducted in the city squares, artisans worked, staggered artists trumpeted their tricks heralds.
Also, the International Festival of Chocolate is held annually in Obidus, and it is not by chance, as several small confectionery factories are located on two streets of the town. The whole city during this culinary action turns into one big confectionery, before the incredible chocolate figures and fountains of which no one can stand. It's not for nothing that the city received an unofficial title: "The Chocolate Capital of Portugal." Photos of Obidusha (17)
