Onego's Godfather Monastery
On the southern tip of the island in the second half of the 17th century, on the personal initiative of Patriarch Nikon "in fulfillment of the vow," the Cross Monastery was founded, for several centuries became the spiritual center of the Onega county .The erection of the architectural ensemble of the monastery took almost 40 years .The first was built in the monastery wooden Vozdvizhenskaya church (it demolished in the early 18th century) .Early buildings in the territory were made of wood and later traditional architecture was also not forgotten, despite the fact that the main structures were built of stone .Located on a compact territory, the monastery blended seamlessly into the rocky terrain of the island .In 1923 the monastery was liquidated, having established in it a base for a children's orphanage .The second consecration of the main side-chapel of the cathedral church of the Godfather Monastery was held on August 30, 1991 on the day of the memory of Patriarch Nikon .
Today the monastery receives pilgrims from all over Russia. To our days, many of the buildings of that time have reached:
- The Holy Cross Cathedral (1657-1661) is a gloomy building with the only surviving head of three, towering on a steep granite rock. The upper parts of its walls are made of granite, and the lower parts are white stone.
- Nakladeznaya Church of the Origin of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord (1661) with the adjoining stone cells of the 18th century. In the 1870-1871 gg. during the renovation of the temple, two white stone plates in the form of a four-pointed cross with enlarged ends were installed here - one depicts the Cross with the instruments of passion on Calvary, and on the other - the text about the foundation and consecration of the monastery by Patriarch Nikon.
- Two-level church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin (1689) with a refectory and Kelaar chambers, a massive bell tower and a burial vault
- The wooden church of All Saints, consecrated by Patriarch Nikon in 1661, and now converted into a dwelling so that it is practically impossible to recognize the oldest wooden building on the territory of the monastery.
- A small fragment of a wooden monastery fence with a tetrahedral tower (1871). During the fire of 1855, the fence burned down, but it was restored in the old place. Such wooden fortifications are a unique phenomenon for the Russian North. In addition to this, such fences have been preserved in three other places.
