History of Vologda
The official date of the founding of Vologda is considered to be 1147. From 1264 to 1456 years. Vologda is in the possession of Novgorod, although from the end of the 13th century it is constantly causing internecine wars between Novgorod, Tver and Moscow princes.
Since 1462 Vologda became the center of the Vologda principality, and in 1481 - it is transformed into the Vologda district, assigned to the Moscow principality. One of the most important transit shopping centers Vologda becomes during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. With him in 1566 in Vologda, the construction of the Vologda Kremlin begins, the first stone of which was laid on April 28 of the same year.
The second flourishing of Vologda falls on the reign of the first Romanovs. In the era of Peter I Vologda became a major military base, and under Catherine II - the center of the Vologda governorate, later renamed the Vologda province.
In 1929, during the Soviet period, Vologda lost the importance of the provincial center: the Vologda province was abolished and is part of the Northern Edge, the center of which is Arkhangelsk. Only in 1937 the Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions are divided, and then the modern borders of the Vologda region are determined.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions
The center of Vologda is formed by four historically formed parts: the City, the Upper Posad, the Lower Posad and Zarechye.
City
The city is the main historical part of Vologda. Its borders coincide with the boundaries of the "Stone Town", the so-called builders themselves called it. The boundaries were located in the area of the currently existing streets of the World, Sergei Orlov, October and Leningrad. In the center is the Kremlin Square with the first stone church of the city, one of the shrines of the Russian North - St. Sophia Cathedral. In 1686-1688, the cathedral inside was painted by the famous Yaroslavl icon painter Dmitri Grigorievich Plekhanov, whose frescoes have survived to this day.
Next to the St. Sophia Cathedral is the Bishop's Compound (Vologda Kremlin), which includes: the Resurrection Cathedral, the Bishops' Chambers, the Church of the Nativity of Christ, the Gavriilovsky and Ireneevsky Corps, the Chambers of Joseph the Golden, the Church of Alexander Nevsky, the Church of the Intercession of Our Lady on Torg.
Upper Posad
Upper Posad is located to the north-west of the City. The northern part is considered the oldest place in Vologda. Here we have preserved the Uspensky Gorny Monastery (19, Burmaginyh Street), the Assumption Church, the Church of Alexia, the Church of St. Nicholas the Golden Crosses. Of particular interest are monuments of wooden architecture - the houses of Zesecky, Volkov, as well as several churches - the Church of Constantine and Helena, the Vladimir Church, the Church of Varlaam Khutynsky, the Church of Elijah in Kamenye.
Lower Posad
The lower Posad is located to the southeast of the City. In the center is the Revolution Square. From the architectural ensembles preserved: the Church of St. John the Forerunner, the Church of the Intercession on the Goat, the Church of St. Nicholas in Glinka, the house of the Noble Assembly and other structures. In the south-eastern part of the Lower Posad are River Station and Peter I's House Museum, as well as the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin and Lazarevskaya Church.
District
The district is located on the left bank of the Vologda River, opposite the City and Lower Posad. Here is the Church of Sretenia, the former home of Admiral Barsh, the Church of St. John Chrysostom and many other attractions.
Neighborhoods
Two kilometers north-east of Vologda, on the left bank of the river, is the Savior-Prilutsky Monastery, founded in 1371 by Dmitri Prilutsky, a prominent figure of the Russian church of the second half of the 14th century, an associate of Sergius of Radonezh.
To the north-west of Vologda in the village of Semenkovo is the Architectural and Ethnographic Museum of the Vologda region. Here are presented residential and farm buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, brought from different parts of the region.
