Expert Reviews on Hotels in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Hotels
Maria Milnichenko company «Bamboo Club»
In Sri Lanka, as in many countries in Asia, there is no official classification of hotels. Starryness is always indicated conditionally, based on the international classification.

The hotel base of the country is very small and belongs most often to English companies. A small part of the hotels is represented by world brands, such as Amanresorts, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Taj. In general, 4-5 * hotels in the country are very few and they are expensive (more expensive than hotels of a similar level in Thailand or Vietnam, for example). "Treshki" should always be chosen especially carefully, despite the fact that many of them are quite decent - it is much more important in this case to choose the right coast and beach.

Many hotels are made in colonial style, the territory is small, but green. There are interesting hotels with eco-concept: located on trees, on stilts among rice fields and canals, clay huts, just wooden houses like bungalows, but with quite modern "stuffing". There are several specialized hotels for restoring health in the Ayurveda system.

Most of the hotels are located on the west and south-west coasts of the island (Bentota district), almost all hotels are located on the first line. In addition, the coast in the more wild south of the island is becoming quite popular - in Tangalla, Mirissa, Weligama, Hikkaduwa.

Food in hotels is mainly offered on the basis of breakfast (BB), but in some cases you can choose half board (HB) and even "all inclusive" (ALL).

Beaches in Sri Lanka, as a rule, do not belong to hotels and only a few have sun loungers and umbrellas on them. However, this does not create any inconvenience, as many hotels are located at the water's edge. Sunbathing can be by the pool, hiding in the shade of trees, and swimming in the ocean.

Which Sri Lanka resort choose

Bentota and the surrounding area are the most famous beach place in the island of Sri Lanka. It is here that the bulk of the hotel fund of the country is located. Bentota has everything you need for a relaxing holiday and not only: five-star hotels and budget "treshki", markets, restaurants, cafes and bars nearby.

Despite the fact that it is in Bentota is the largest part of the hotel fund of the country, there is absolutely no crowding and crowded beaches - almost all hotels are at a decent distance from each other. This circumstance will undoubtedly be enjoyed by fans of a quiet, romantic holiday on the ocean coast ... With the only proviso that all the ocean here is rarely quiet and safe: from May to September the south-west monsoon blows. On the ocean at this time are frequent waves, and rains are much more frequent.

From the hotels in the Bentota region, you can easily recommend such things as Bentota Beach (Cinnamon Beach) 4 *, Vivanta by Taj Bentota 5 *, The Surf Bentota (ex. Lihiniya Surf) 4 *, Club Bentota 3 *, Serendipity 4 * (ex. Avani Bentota). These hotels have their own beaches and landscaped green area.

Trincomalee is the most famous resort in the east of Sri Lanka. At a time when in Bentota rainy and on the ocean strong waves, in Trincomale is quiet, calm and sunny. In the Trincomale area, the remains of a coral reef have been preserved, which almost always guarantees the absence of waves at any time of the year. In addition, you can quite successfully swim with a mask and snorkel, especially if you swim on a boat to the island of Pigeon (Pigeon Island), where turquoise, almost Maldivian transparent water and colorful fish.

Hotels in this region are small, the tourist infrastructure is weak. Therefore, when choosing the type of food, it is best to give preference to a half-board (HB). In Trincomale, you can safely stop at hotels such as: Nilaveli Beach Hotel 3 *, Pigeon Island Beach 4 *, Chaaya Blu 4 * and, of course, in the luxurious new Maalu Maalu Resort 5 *. The best time of year for a holiday on the east coast of the island: the period from May to September.

Tangalle is practically nothing remarkable village, which is located on the south coast of the island ... It is quite difficult to get there (more than 4 hours drive by car from the airport). But everyone who gets there will be rewarded with amazing views of the endless desert coast, wild jungles and beautiful rocks.

Of the hotels on the southern coast, you should especially consider the paradise Eva Lanka Hotel 4 *, the equally romantic Talalla Retreat 4 *, the new Ranna 212 4 *, the many favorite Dickwella Village Resort 4 * or the luxurious The Fortress 5 * Boutique (in the place called Koggala). Fans of the "eco-style" can consider Palm Paradise Cabanas 3 * - a very colorful hotel, which is a complex of wooden bungalows under a thatched roof. The best time of year for a holiday in the south of the country: the period from October to April.

Hikkaduwa is another popular and popular place in Sri Lanka for young people, surfers and divers. Another category of travelers is hardly worth considering Hikkaduwa as their refuge: the coast is strewn with inexpensive guest-houses and more than modest hotels for divers. Hotels of a good level (except for a more or less decent Citrus Hikkaduwa 3 *) is not here. The beach strip is very narrow and squeezed on the one hand by the very busy highway Matara Road, and on the other - by the ocean, the waves turn into long lambs ...
