The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka announced that the Department of Immigration and Emigration had carried out the necessary work to install and launch a new electronic travel authorization system, Electronic Travel Authorization - ETA, for issuing preliminary approval for a short-term visa on-line for foreign citizens, visiting Sri Lanka and transit passengers.

Citizens of 78 countries, including Russia and the CIS countries, will have to pay the relevant fee for obtaining an electronic entry permit (ETA) if they arrive in the country for tourism, medical care, sports, etc. Documents are submitted via the website www .eta.gov.lk. Over time, general information on the conditions of entry will be translated into 9 languages, but the application itself will be filled exclusively in English.

There are 6 options for filing an application:

  • personally by the applicant
  • third party on behalf of the applicant.
  • through a registered agency
  • Through the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the country of citizenship
  • Through the main center of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka
  • foreign nationals who do not have the opportunity to apply in advance will be able to obtain a visa at the point of arrival, paying the fee and filling the application on the spot.

The citizens of Maldives and Singapore, as well as crews of ships and airplanes, can get a free visa on arrival.

From October 1 to December 31, the Electronic Travel Authorization system is in test mode. From January 1, 2012 ETA comes into full operation.
