How to get to Duggie

  • the best way - as part of an organized excursion. Russian tour operators offer a one-day trip to Duggu, sometimes with a passing trip to the town of Zaguan and a visit to the Temple of Water. The cost of the tour is from 65 to 75 dinars, this amount includes lunch at the Duggie tourist restaurant. The time of the survey of the archaeological park under the guidance of the guide is about 3 hours.
  • renting a car. Focus on the cost of 65 - 70 dinars per day for cars of economy class plus gasoline costs. The road is not too good, but without obvious potholes. The closest resort to Dougga is Hammamet, also easily accessible from Tunis.
  • it is not recommended to count on public transport: buses and minibuses do not come directly to Duggu, their nearest stop is Tebursuk city, 8 km to the north, from where you can get to Duggie by a usual yellow taxi. There are shuttle buses from Tunis, Le Kef and Beja to Tebursuk, which in turn still need to be reached from the coastal resort towns.

Weather forecast for Dougga

At least a three-hour walk through the archaeological park is best left for one of the cooler days. In the peak of the summer heat, it is better not to go here: there is absolutely no saving shadow in Dugge, and in July-August it is easy to fall into prostration not so much from imperial greatness as from stunning baking. As an option - to arrive in a rented car at about 8 am, in order to catch everything before noon.

Where to dine at Dougge

The only possibility is in a tourist restaurant near the central entrance. For a fixed fee you will be offered an unlimited number of approaches to the buffet, drinks are paid separately. Keep in mind that early in the morning, as well as in low season, the restaurant does not work. Another option is to buy a sandwich on the way to Dougge or take food with you when you leave the hotel.

3 things to do in Dougge
  1. To recite something from William of our Shakespeare on the stage of a magnificent Roman amphitheater.
  2. Visit latrine - an ancient toilet for 12 people.
  3. Take a picture next to an eloquent pointer to a city brothel.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Duggie

In Dugge there is an abundance of ruins of ancient buildings of all times, appointments and layouts. At the very beginning of the excursion route there is the Duggie amphitheater, built in 199 AD. e. one of the rich of the city. It accommodates 3, 5 thousand spectators, it still serves as a venue for the annual theater festival.

The center of the archaeological park is a forum and the Windy Square (on a rosette cut in a marble you can read the names of the twelve winds, among them - Africanus, known to us under the name sirocco). There is also a famous temple - the Capitol, the "face" of Duggie, - a massive portico, 8-meter solid pillars and three niches for statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.

In Dougga, there is absolutely no saving shadow, and in July-August it is easy to fall into prostration not so much from imperial greatness as from the astounding baking.

A little lower - the terms of Caracalla and the remains of numerous villas of wealthy citizens (some of them have wonderful mosaics). Indisputable hit - latinia, public toilets for 12 seats arranged in the form of a semicircle, so that it would be more convenient to conduct philosophical conversations, and a tripolium - city brothel.

Undisputed masterpieces include the ancient Punic Mausoleum (II century BC), the only monument of its kind on the territory of Tunisia, and perfectly preserved.

In Dougga 21 temples of different periods - from the Roman Temple of Minerva to the Church of Victoria, built in the era of the Vandal invasion of North Africa. In a word, almost certainly there will be more sights than forces, so that they can all be inspected. At the entrance to the park it is recommended to purchase a map and determine the optimal and, most importantly, feasible route.

If you inspect Duggu not as part of an organized tour, you can use the services of local guides. One of them, Hedi bel Larbi, is a local attraction: a 70-year-old elder with a youthful quickness will take you from the building to the building and recite Lafontaine's fables from the stage of the amphitheater.
