The Central Anatolia region (Anadolu IC) - flat desert steppes and salt marshes, lying on an ancient plateau with a sharp continental climate - a choice for sophisticated travelers. It is here that you will find the most interesting tourist sites of Turkey, untouched nature, "lunar landscapes" and traces of numerous disappeared civilizations. In Central Anatolia, the capital of Ankara is located, and other Turkish megacities, the freedom-loving Eskişehir, breathless desert sands, the fantastic Tuz lake.

The locals are rather conservative and adhere to ancient traditions.

A bit of history

One of the oldest human settlements in the world, the "cradle of civilization" Chatal (dated to 7500 BC), is located right here, in the steppes to the east of Konya.

The first large state in the territory of Central Anatolia - the Kingdom of the Hittites, who were almost constantly at war with the Egyptian pharaohs. In the 10th century BC, the Phrygians came here who cut down the temples on the slopes of the sacred mountains. Subsequently, the region was consistently invaded by the Lydians, Persians and the armies of Alexander the Great. The succession of the rulers of the region was continued by the Celts and Romans, the Seljuk Turks and the Ottoman Empire.

The famous "Gordian Knot" was cut in Gordion, whose ruins are located 60 km west of Ankara.

In winter, colds are often as low as -20 °, but in the absence of moisture, it is easy to tolerate cold. In summer it is sunny, hot and dry in the daytime, cool in the evening and cold at night. Spring and autumn are rainy, but not too much.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions in Central Anatolia

In addition to Ankara, the capital and the second largest city in Turkey, Aksaray, the winter resort of Kayseri and Konya, the birthplace of dervish culture, you can visit many amazing and unique places in Central Anatolia:

  • Elegant Dyvrigi, in which there is a unique mosque, covered with two domes. At the mosque, directly adjoining it, in the 13th century a hospital was built. Now this monument of architecture is under the protection of UNESCO.
  • Eskishehir is a stunning fusion of history and a modern young university town. In Eskisheir there is the tomb of King Midas, a character of Greek mythology, who turned all surrounding objects into gold with his touch.
  • Sivas is a pearl of Seljuk architecture of the 13th century and the Ottoman Empire. Here you can see a lot of beautiful mosques of 12-13 centuries, madrassas, mausoleums. In the city we weave magnificent carpets and kilims, make original bags and belts. In the vicinity of Sivas there are hot springs and spa centers.
  • Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü), located in the heart of Central Anatolia, between Ankara, Konya and Aksaray. It is, despite its shallow water (2 m maximum depth), the second largest lake in Turkey. In summer the water in the lake almost completely evaporates, and you can walk along its brilliant white saltbed bottom. In the spring and autumn, the Tuz lake becomes a strategic point for the recreation of many flocks of migratory birds.
  • If you want to enjoy the calm of the desert, go to Karapinnara, almost completely abandoned town on the edge of a sandy desert 170 km southeast of Konya. Sand dunes look especially dramatic against the backdrop of the recent planting of green forests.
