The most famous resorts of the Islands of the Society (Îles de la Société, in Tahitian - Tōtaiete mā): Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, Taha'a and Hua Hin (Huahine).

Islands of the Society are divided into two groups - Windward and Leeward. Economically, they are the most important of the five archipelagoes of French Polynesia. The main island of the islands is Tahiti, where 70% of the population lives and where the capital of French Polynesia Papeete is located. The main population is concentrated in the coastal regions, the population is very rare in the mountainous centers of the islands.

The first European to see the islands of the Society was Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeven, who sailed on June 6, 1722 near Bora Bora and Maupiti. Roggeven erroneously mistook them for the islands of the Tonga archipelago that Jacob Lemaire visited in 1616.
