The world's largest high-mountain sports complex Medeo is located in the same name of the Zailiysky Alatau near Almaty at an altitude of about 1700 meters above sea level.
Construction of the sports complex began in the autumn of 1949, and although the first official competitions took place here in February 1951, the stadium with artificial ice was built only in 1972, and its area was more than 10.5 thousand square meters. meters. This allowed us to hold competitions in high-speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating and other winter sports.
However, after the collapse of the USSR, competitions in Medeo were not held for a long time, and the complex began to decline. Its full technical reconstruction was carried out only in 2003, and now the complex works for visitors all year round.
From the destructive impact of mudflows Medeo is protected by the dam of the same name, built in the late 1960s and located to the south of the ice rink. Special vodovladishche allows you to keep about 6 million cubic meters of water, and on the stairs leading to the dam and consisting of 842 steps, competitions are held regularly for climbing at a speed.
For several years in a row (1990-2004), the ice rink turned into a huge concert venue, where the popular international music festival "Voice of Asia" ("Asia Dauysy") was held, in which not only Kazakh performers but also pop stars from all over the world took part .
High-mountain skating rink is open daily from October to May from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 19:00 to 23:00 (from 13:00 to 19:00 - a technical break). The entrance fee for the skating rink is 1800 tenge.
