How to get to Ferapontovo

The Ferapontov Monastery is located 20 km from Kirillov and 120 km from Vologda. Accordingly, the main way of communication Ferapontovo with the outside world runs through these cities.

From Kirillov, twice a week there is a bus - on Tuesdays and Thursdays (departures at 8:30 and 14:00, en route 30 minutes). Another option: along the road, that two kilometers from Ferapontovo pass buses to Lipin Bor and Vytegra. They can stop and land passengers on demand (en route 2, 5 hours, 2-3 buses per day).

From Moscow, the most convenient option - a nightly night train to Vologda. From St. Petersburg, you can also travel through Vologda or Cherepovets.

By car: from Vologda on the P5 highway to the north. From Cherepovets along the P6 highway to the north via Belozersk, then through Ivanov Bor (the new bridge through Sheksna) and Kirillov.

The ensemble of monuments of the Ferapontov Monastery, founded by the Monk Ferapont in 1398, consists of six stone buildings of the 15th and 17th centuries, surrounded by a stone wall of the 19th and 20th centuries: the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral, 1490; the Church of the Annunciation with a refectory chamber, 1531; state chamber, XVI century; the church of the Monk Martinian, 1641; the gate church of the Epiphany with the chapel of the Monk Ferapont, 1650; bell tower, 1680 г.

The core of the architectural ensemble of the Ferapontov Monastery is the one-domed Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin - the first stone building of Belozerye - the oldest and most interesting building of the monastery .It almost unchanged preserved frescoes of the late 15th century, made by Dionysius and his sons Feodosiy and Vladimir .This is the only church in Russia that preserved such ancient frescos created by the greatest painter of his time..In addition to the frescoes, Dionysius also performed the iconostasis, details of which can now be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as in the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery Museum .

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin is in the center of a complex of temples, connected by common porches. From the south to it the tent church of Martinian is attached, from the north - the belltower, further - the Refectory Chamber and the small church of the Annunciation. Another complex consists of the Holy Gates with the unified churches of the Epiphany and Ferapont, the only ones operating in the monastery.

Church of the Annunciation with a refectory chamber (1530-1531 gg.). The interior of the refectory is the earliest preserved in its original form in the Russian North in buildings of this type.

The Treasury Chamber is the oldest stone monument of civil architecture of the 16th century from the preserved in the North of Russia. The chamber was intended for storing the documents of the Ferapontov Monastery.

The Martinian Church (1641, the porch was added in the middle of the 19th century). The tent church was built above the burial place of the second founder of the Ferapontov Monastery, a teacher of Martinian.

The gate churches of the Epiphany and the Rev. Ferapontus over the Holy Gates. 1650. The churches were built above the two-span Holy Gates. Unique to the complete preservation of all elements of architecture. Together with the government bureau adjoining the south form the main facade of the Ferapontov Monastery.

Belltower, 1680's. - three-tier, tent, very rare type with a square ringing plan and a tetrahedral tent. On the tier of the bell hang 17 bells. In the tent there is a unique mechanism of the earliest surviving Russian military hours of 1638.

The monastery is picturesquely located between two lakes (the entrance from the shore of the Borodaevsky lake) and is visible from afar from all sides. Two kilometers to the south of the monastery is Tsypina Gora (204 meters) and the wooden church of Elijah the Prophet at Tsypy Pogost.

In addition to frescoes, the museum contains an exposition on the history of the monastery and church art in the Church of the Annunciation, as well as an ethnographic exposition on the first floor of the Refectory.
