In Gomel there are at least two amazing attractions: the Old Believer church and monuments. The Church is the only one of its kind in all of Belarus. She survived the tsarist and Soviet power, as well as the capture of the country by fascist troops. Today she continues to work and receives parishioners. And the monuments sometimes look like a mockery of the guests of the city. Only you want to put flowers to the pedestal of Lenin, as you stumble upon Iron Man or Pinocchio. And there is one monument that asks for a light.

3 things to do in Gomel
  1. To see a flying saucer - in Gomel anyone can see a UFO. To do this, climb over the city on the Ferris wheel and look for the building of the circus, which in shape resembles a flying saucer. In the 70s, the construction of such a building caused a scandal, because the UFO did not fit into the standard houses of Gomel.
  2. To get sick of "Gomel" - the local football club once became the champion of Belarus. In principle, the team plays well, although recently and left the Major Leagues. Belarusian football is not the most spectacular in the world, but a trip to the stadium can be fun.
  3. Swim in the fountain - in Gomel there are many interesting fountains. And even if you did not serve in the Airborne, you can, together with the children in hot weather, dip into the waters of the fountain. It does not matter whether the condemning locals are looking at you, the main thing is that you will become lighter and happier.

Ilyinsky Church

This is the oldest preserved Old Believer temple in Belarus. It was built in the 18th century on the site of a forest, where the Old Believers were hidden from the royal power. The church is made in an unusual style: it consists of three log buildings, one after the other on one axis. It is said that Emelyan Pugachev was twice here.

The church was able to survive without loss the change of power and is still operational. The only one of its kind in the whole country.

St. Nicholas Monastery

The money for the construction of this monastery at the beginning of the last century was collected by the whole city. Mugs for donations stood at the railway station. The monastery was erected in honor of St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of seamen, shooters, merchants and children.

During the Soviet era, the building housed a club, then a warehouse, the interior of the monastery was badly damaged. He miraculously survived during the Great Patriotic War and since the 1960s he began to receive parishioners again.

In the monastery among the relics there are icons of St. Nicholas, the holy righteous John Kormyansky, the icon with the relics of the Optina Elders, and also the revered list of the Kozelschansky icon of the Mother of God.
