Sights of Bulgaria, home to the world famous Gladiator Spartacus and the ancient Greek legendary hero Orpheus, are interesting cities; unique monuments of culture, rooted in antiquity; beautiful natural attractions, some of which are under the protection of UNESCO; impressive religious architecture and much more. To visit everything and immediately for one trip, even in the case of a long holiday on the coast, it is unlikely to succeed, so it is worthwhile to choose in advance interesting places for an inspection.

Natural attractions

In Bulgaria there are several large nature conservation areas, popular with tourists. The territory of three national parks, in the mountains of Pirin, Rila and Stara Planina, eleven natural parks, including parks Vitosha, Blue Stones, Strandzha, Rila Monastery, and more than eighty reserves, among which is Chuprene and "Srebrana", is one of the main riches of the country.

At least two biosphere reserves - Pirinsky and Srebrina - are on hearing. This is due to the fact that these parks are protected by the World Heritage. The reasons for the inclusion of reserves in the UNESCO list are quite understandable: both places are habitats of endemics, that is, species that live strictly in a certain zone. In "Srebren" there are about 100 species of birds, it is because of this that one of the scientists nicknamed the reserve "bird Eldorado", in Pirinsky you can find many rare and endangered plant species.

The name of the reserve "Srebrina" recalls the Russian word "silver" and refers to two legends about the origin of the name of the area. The fact is that the main local attraction is the lake of the same name, it looks like silver in the moonlight. According to one version, in honor of this optical illusion and nicknamed the pond. Another legend is more prosaic. A boat filled with precious metal floated on the lake

The Natural Park Rila Monastery is a large nature reserve near one of the main cultural attractions of Bulgaria, the famous Rila Monastery. If time suffices not only to visit the complex of religious buildings included in the UNESCO list, then it is worthwhile to take a walk along one of the walking routes. On the territory of the park there are about 30 lakes, including those that enter the Seven Rila Lakes.

Seven lakes in the Rila mountains are unique ponds of glacial origin, named according to their shape. So, the highest lake is called "Tear". Other lakes are named "Eye", "Kidney", "Twins", "Shamrock", etc.

Cultural attractions

Cultural monuments of Bulgaria are very diverse, beginning with the traces of the ancient Thracians, Romans until the Nativity of Christ and in the first centuries and ending with beautiful Orthodox monasteries. Unfortunately, there are not so many museums. Most are concentrated in Veliko Tarnovo and Sofia. From the tour point of view, the most interesting are the cities of Nessebar, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv and Sofia, which is worth a visit at least for the sake of understanding how the capital looks.

Seven lakes in the Rila mountains are unique ponds of glacial origin, named according to their shape. So, the highest lake is called "Tear".

Ancient monuments

The most famous are the Thracian tombs and the Madara horseman on the territory of the National Historical and Archaeological Reserve Madara. The tombs are located near Kazanlak, in the vicinity of which once was the capital of the Thracians Sevtopol, and the village of Sveshtari, within the Sboryanovo archaeological reserve.

The tombs were created around the 3rd century BC and are fairly well preserved. Particularly interesting are the frescoes and female figures carved from stone in Sveshtari. The Madara horseman is a legacy of a completely different culture. The relief in the form of a horse rider on the horse dates from the 8th century AD. It is believed that this is an image of one of the Bulgarian khans. All three attractions are protected by World Heritage.

Churches and monasteries

In all, there are about 500 Orthodox monasteries in Bulgaria, and this excludes individual churches, cathedrals and chapels. Most of the religious buildings in the vicinity of the capital of Sofia. Usually the excursions are visited at least - the monastery of Aladzha, a medieval complex carved into a rock, near Varna, the Rila Monastery, located in the mountains, and the second largest after the Rila - Bachkovo monastery. Also worth paying attention to the Boyana church at the foot of Vitosha and the cave churches in Ivanovo.

Mosques

Today, the overwhelming majority of Bulgarians are Orthodox Christians. Muslims make up about 10% of the total number of believers. However, the history of this state is closely connected with the history of Islam, and traces of the Turks' stay can be found in the guise of a modern city. This is most pronounced in a few mosques, among which is the mosque of Banya Bashi in Sofia, built in the middle of the 16th century and one of the oldest in Europe, and the largest in the Balkans, the mosque of Tombul in Shumen.
