A little further, 45 km from Siem Reap lies the sacred mountain and the pilgrimage site of Phnom Kulen. In 802, at this site, King Jayarvarman II declared the country's independence from Java, marking the beginning of modern Cambodia. At the top is a small temple, located on a rocky ledge. Nearby - a stone statue of Buddha carved directly from the rock and a small pool with a lingam in the center. Below the river there is a large waterfall around which you can swim.
30 km to the north-east of Bayon, lies another unique monument - Kbalsepan or "River of Thousands of Lingams". Here, right in the riverbed, phallic symbols and sculptures of gods are carved from stone.
