Good afternoon! I would be very grateful if you could help me by answering my question: we are going to go to Italy from Moscow in late April. I am a Russian citizen and my friend from the USA. Tour will take in Russia. He will fly to Russia and on the same day we want to fly to Italy, back also to return to Russia. What documents (visas) should my friend have?

A US citizen does not need a visa to Italy. In the Schengen zone, he can stay up to 90 days without a visa as a tourist.
