The University for Foreigners in Perugia (Università per Stranieri di Perugia) is one of two in the whole country (the other in Siena), which opened its doors exclusively to foreign students. This is the oldest and most prestigious university in Italy, where they not only study, research, but also promote the Italian language and culture.

History

The University was founded in 1921, when the local lawyer Astorre Lupattelli created courses on studying the culture, history and nature of his native land - Umbria. The aim of the courses was to increase the level of knowledge of both local residents and representatives of other countries about the history, traditions of the region.

Prior to 1926, courses were held in the building of the University of Perugia (L'Università degli Studi di Perugia), as well as in Sala dei Notari Palazzo Priori. Since 1927 the university was able to settle in its own building, Palazzo Gallenga, in the heart of the city.
