A bit of history
Setubal was erected on the site of a settlement of ancient Romans, known as the Setobriga. In the 4th century, this city experienced a happy tsunami, a full-fledged life after which it resumed only in the 11th century, and after another three hundred years, in the era of development of navigation, life in Setubal began to be beaten. However, in the 17th century it was practically compared to the earth during the earthquake, but recovered quickly.
Kitchen
Setubal will please the lovers of sea delicacies, in many restaurants only exclusively fish is prepared, and in the most popular institution of the city - O Rei do Choco Frito serves a rather unusual dish that everyone who is here should try - cuttlefish in the Setubal way.
Beach
Despite the fact that Setubal is located on the Atlantic coast, it does not have the status of a resort city. Nevertheless, in its surroundings there is a stunning beauty, a furnished beach surrounded by rocks and unassailable for winds. Here you can not only swim in the ocean and take a sun bath, but also engage in a variety of water sports.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Setubal
The main attraction of the area is the ancient fortress Estrada de Sao Felipe, built in the 16th century by the order of the Portuguese monarch Philip II to protect against predatory raids by pirates. This fortress has an interesting architectural feature - in form it is a five-pointed star, the entrance to which is protected not only by a massive metal gate, but also by a mysterious underground tunnel.
In addition, it is worth to visit the ruins of Setobriga - they are still one of the main historical sights of Portugal.
Another interesting place, fanned by the same mystical halo, is the temple of Nossa Senhora do Cabo. It impresses everyone with its beauty and grandeur, unusual arches, but the main place of its location. After all, this temple was built just on a steep rock, according to which, according to legend, rose from the ocean to the city of the Theotokos. For several centuries in a row to visit these places, every Christian considered his duty.
Not less majestic and the Gothic Cathedral is the real jewel of Setubal .Built in the 15th century by the design of one of the best architects of those times, Diogo Bayrak, the cathedral is the oldest building in the city .Special gracefulness is attached to it by twisted columns of limestone of pink hue, but the main decoration is the Cross of the Savior, placed in front of the portal at the entrance .Near the temple once housed a small monastery on the territory of which today is the Museum of Religion, where there are not only valuable objects intended for religious rituals, but also beautiful canvases devoted to religious topics..
The archeological museum of Setubal is of genuine interest, which contains a huge collection of exhibits from different eras that are able to fully illustrate the history of the city's development and the peculiarities of their life.
Setúbal neighborhoods
And not only in the city, but also in its environs, you can see many interesting things. Perhaps the most spectacular sight that is observed here is the evening migration of dolphins. The fact is that every day these clever creatures swim at the mouth of the Sadu River to refresh themselves with fish. Being in this picturesque place, and even in the company of these clever creatures, you really get distracted from the daily bustle and get an incredible charge of positive emotions.
