Shopping and Kuching shops

Kuching - an excellent place to buy traditional Malay souvenirs made by themselves. A wide selection can be found in shops on the streets of Main Bazaar, Lorong Wayang and Jalan Temple. Prices are high enough, but bargaining is appropriate.

If you want to buy more civilized goods, it is worth to go through the numerous shopping centers of the city: Wisma Saberkas on the street. Jalan Green, Sarawak Plaza and Tun Jugah Complex on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Wisma Hopoh on Jalan P. Ramlee, Wisma Phoenix on Jalan Song Tian Cheong Cheok) and the Kuching Plaza by Jalan McDougall.

At Jalan Satok, during the Sunday Fair, you can find antiques, rare herbs, fruits, plants and animals (for example, such banal foods as boar or tortoiseshell). Bidding starts at 5:00 am.

Kitchen and restaurants

Kuching is the best place to try the Sarawak cuisine, the dishes of which are very unlike the "general Malaysian" .One of the most popular dishes - "sarawak laksa", a stew from the whole growing and floating nearby: vegetables, fruits, greens and seafood, generously flavored with gravy .Another traditional dish - "pegs-mi," noodles with pieces of pork, chicken and beef meatballs in the entourage of sweet and sour sauce .From exotic dishes you can venture to try "umai" - a salad of chilled fresh fish, onion and chili peppers flavored with lime juice..

Certainly worth a cup of delicious Saravak coffee and a glass of the drink "White Lady": milk, fruit syrup and a slice of lemon.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Kuching

Astana Palace, consisting of three bungalows with verandas, was built in 1870 by Charles Brook Raj as a gift to his wife, Rani Margaret. The palace stands on the northern bank of the Sarawak River and is easily visible from the pier of Pangkalan Batu. Now here is the official residence of the governor of the state, where all major state events are held.

Fort Margherita, which is located next to the palace of Astana, is also dedicated to the wife of the raja Charles Brook, Rani Margaret. Currently, the Fort is housed in the Police Museum.

The Court Building is another legacy of the Brook Empire. Doors, window grilles and a vault of the impressive facade of the building are decorated with elaborate ornaments in the traditional style of the peoples of Sarawak. Previously, the state government was located, now - the Supreme Court of East Malaysia.

City Tower Square Tower, like its London prototype, was first erected as a place of confinement, with a dungeon in the lower part. Actually the tower was built up later, where in due time even rolled up real balls.

A magnificent construction with golden domes is the main mosque of the state, which is now located on the site of the old wooden Masjid Besar ("Great Mosque").

Kuching

Also worth a visit: the Kuching embankment (Jalan Gambier, Jalan Gambier) is one of the favorite places for walks of local residents, the main post office of Kuching (a unique portico in the Greek style that supports the Corinthian columns). From the post office begins the first major highway Sarawak.

And also the temples of Kuching: the oldest in the city of Tua Peck Kong, which is famous for the feast of remembrance of the souls of the departed Vang-Kang. And the temple of Kuek-Seng-Ong, where Chinese fishermen-henhua pray, asking for a rich catch and safe return to the coast.

Sarawak Museum

The building of the museum of Sarawak is considered one of the most beautiful in Asia. The extensive collection includes ethnographic and archaeological artifacts, permanent exhibits of traditional handicraft artifacts of the state, Chinese porcelain, as well as meetings that tell about the life of local tribes. A model of the caves of Niakh is shown, where traces of a man, whose age reaches 40 thousand years, were found. Entrance - free, opening hours: Mon-Thu, Sat 9: 30-17: 30, Sun 9: 30-18: 00.
