Bilbao (in Basque Bilbo) is a city that strikes with its life, energy, culture and, at the same time, calmness and civilization (in the right sense of the word). The largest and most populous city of the Basque Country Bilbao lies on the banks of the river Nervión and is surrounded by the green hills of the province of Vizcaya.

Bilbaínos (inhabitants of the city) sometimes call it botxo - the "hole", in the ironic and good-natured sense of the word, playing around with the topography of the area.
After the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao acquired an international cultural status.

Bilbao - a well of modern architecture. For some two years here were built: Norman Foster metro, airport and a glass bridge across the river from Santiago Calatrava and where this bridge leads - the Guggenheim Museum, a masterpiece by Frank Gerry. At the end of the 20th century it was a large industrial center, the working traditions are still strong here. But in the 21st century, after the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, the city acquired an international cultural status. Bilbaínos appreciate 'El Goog' (as they call the museum), but consider it far from being the only adornment of the city.

By train

Renfe trains leave from the Abando railway station, which is on the other side of the river from Plaza Arriaga and Casco Viejo. From there, trains run twice daily to Madrid (€ 32.80, 6¼ hours) and Barcelona (€ 38, 9 hours). You can also reach Valladolid (€ 21.90, 4 hours) and Burgos (€ 16.70, 3 hours). The next railway station, Concordia, with a nice façade in the Art Nouveau style, is used by FEVE, a private railway company engaged in the transportation of passengers west of Bilbao, to Cantabria and Asturias.

By bus

The bus station Termibus (San Mamés) is located to the south-west of the city center. There, just to the right, is the railway station, from where the Renfe trains and Eusko Tran trains depart. From Termibus you can take buses to Madrid (€ 24.70, 4¾ hours), Barcelona (€ 38.10, 7 hours), Burgos (€ 10.90, 2 hours), Vitoria (€ 4.95, 50 minutes), Pamplona (€ 11.60, 1¾ hour), Logroño (€ 10.90, two hours) and the French border. Pesa buses run to San Sebastian (€ 8.65, en route one hour, every 30 minutes). Bizkaibus organizes trips to the rural part of the Basque Country, including the Lekeitio and Bermeo communes.

Transport

Bilbao's Eusko Tran are convenient for both local and tourists. The route Basurtu in the south-west of the city goes to the railway station Atxuri. The stops include Termibus Bus Station, the Gug Museum and the Arriaga Theater in the Casco Viejo area. The ticket costs € 1 and must be punched before boarding.

The main metro stations are Ensanche and Casco Viejo. The fare is from € 1.20. This is the ideal mode of transport to get from one river bank to another, as well as to nearby beaches.

Recall that the Metro is building a famous master of architecture, he is the author of the scandalous "Orange" instead of the CHA, Sir Norman Foster. Despite the fact that Muscovites criticized the architect's orange creation, the people of Bilbao were quite satisfied with their subway. It was opened in 1995, glass stained-glass windows and chrome-plated Fosteritos entrances were used in the decoration.

Entertainment, sightseeing and sightseeing Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum - the main attraction of Bilbao - contains the richest collection of 20th century art objects. To the west of the museum are the old docks and warehouses of the Abandoibarra district, which are being actively rebuilt. Here you can visit the new shopping center Zubiarte, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Doña Casilda Iturissa Park and the nearby stadium, the Martimoría de Bilbao Museum, as well as the shipyard reconstructed into the Euskalduna Conference Center.

Casco Viejo (Old Town) lies on the east coast. Here are interesting: the building of the City Hall, the grandiose mansions of the Neguri district, the Basilica of the Catedral de Santiago, the San Anton church, the old El Arenal district, the Arriaga theater. Honored glory is enjoyed by the art museum of Euskal-Museo-Bilbao, located in the complex of the old monastery of San Andres.

At the exit of Casco Viejo it is worth to visit the old market of Art Nouveau-Mercado de la Ribera on the river bank, which offers the freshest seafood and is considered one of the largest covered markets in Europe.
