In 1936, at the Summer Olympics in Berlin with the Principality of Liechtenstein and Haiti, embarrassment occurred: their flags turned out to be exactly the same! When a small European country recovered from the shock, the flag was decided to modify.

Before the games, since 1921, one of the main state attributes was a rectangular (proportions 3: 5) cloth with a blue and red strip on it. They were of equal size, the red strip, the colors of the sunset in the spurs of the Alps, where the Principality is located, was below, and the blue symbolizing the blue of the heavens above it.

To differ from Haiti, June 24, 1937, a blue strip was added to the image of the crown. It is a symbol of the sovereign power in the country - Liechtenstein is a constitutional monarchy. The crown is located in the left third of the strip, its vertical axis is a quarter away from the total length of the flag. June 30, 1982, the design of the crown changed a little (it became more detailed, like an openwork), and the flag took its present form.
