Nisyros is a small island in the Aegean Sea between the islands of Kos and Tilos. Earlier it was an active volcano, although there is nothing to fear: it breathed 12 years ago, and erupted for the last time about 700 years ago. Usually here come on excursions from neighboring islands or from mainland Greece.

Nisyros is also called Kos's satellite, as this is the nearest island.

If you believe the ancient myths, the god of the sea Poseidon tore off the rock from the island of Kos and threw it into the guilty giant Polybot - hit and crushed, so much so that he still lies under this block and sighs. This is how the origin of the volcano is explained.

The island is home to about a thousand people, mainly in the only city, capital and port of Mandraki.

How to get

You can get by swimming. But usually tourists come here on a ferry, catamaran or yacht (from Kos - 50 minutes). When there are 20,000 islands in the country, this is the usual means of transportation. In fact, it is easier, probably, to sail to Nisyros from the Turkish coast, to which it is within easy reach. $ $

Transport

If you come to Nisyros as part of an organized excursion, then you will be on the bus by foot and sometimes on foot. Independent travelers can rent a car or bike in the Mandrake harbor.

Beaches of Nisiros

The coastline of Nisiros stretches for almost 30 kilometers, so there are enough picturesque beaches here. The main beach is located in Mandraki, near it there is an unusual beach Hohlaki with black pebbles, in the southern part of the island you can sunbathe on Avlaki. In the bay of St. Antonio there are dazzling white beaches, in addition, you can go to the beaches of a small island of Yali, which can be seen from the coast.

Nisiros hotels

Given the size of the island, there are not so many hotels here, and they all stretched along the coastline. For example, Porfyris Hotel is a level 2 hotel in Mandraki, 200 meters from the beach and 9 km from the volcano. Among its advantages are reasonable prices (from $ 45 per day), a chic view from the rooms and proximity to all the benefits of civilization in the port.

White Beach Hotel Nissyros is located on a hill - farther from the port and from the sea. Prices here, respectively, lower. Hotel Xenon, Hotel Romantzo, Hotel Sevasti are ideal hotels for those who want to relax in a secluded beautiful place at an attractive price.

The island is also famous for its healing springs, they say that in their time Hippocrates visited them. Who wants to feel the healing effect of water, can go to the health resort of Lutri at 1.5 km from the port and visit the hydrothermal crater "Stefanos".

Shopping

All the most in the necessary can be bought in the shops of the capital, and global purchases are better done in larger cities and islands. The only thing Nisyros is famous for is pumice. The island is the main supplier of this product in Greece, naturally, thanks to its volcano. So be sure to grab a souvenir from the island.

Kitchen and restaurants

In the port on the coast there are several cozy and inexpensive eateries and taverns that guarantee you delicious food, a pleasant atmosphere and a chic sea view. In the small fishing village of Piloy, you can try dishes from freshly caught fish.

Nishiro's entertainment, excursions and attractions

The main attraction of Nisyros is its volcano, which provides local population with pumice stone, and also attracts crowds of tourists. Despite the fact that the volcano is still active, it is absolutely safe. You can even get into its craters, breathe hydrogen sulphide (which is not very pleasant), walk on hot land with boiling mud puddles. The view from the edge of the volcano is delicious - it captures the spirit!

Nature on the island is not very rich, vegetation is only on the coast and where it is taken care of, in other places it burns under the scorching sun, so the island is quite deserted, but against the backdrop of the sea, the black earth and rocks look gorgeous. Another interesting place - Embores, a real oasis with rich gardens and mineral springs.

A kilometer away from the port there is a picturesque and cozy fishing village of Pali, where not only beautiful, but also delicious - be sure to try the local fishing cuisine.

Walking around Mandraki, take a look at the 14th century Gothic castle and the monastery of the early 17th century. By the way, in the ancient part of the city you can get to the present Middle Ages, where the streets are so narrow that houses literally touch the roofs. And if you seriously take an interest in the history of the island and local customs - visit the Nisiros Museum.

Above the city stands the medieval fortress and the church of the Virgin Pescherna (Panagia Spilliani), the patroness of the island. Above the port is the ancient acropolis of Paleokastro (4th-5th century BC) and the remains of the ancient city of Nisyros (about the 7th century BC). Ruins are surrounded by a fortress wall 2-3 meters thick, erected several centuries later.

A kilometer away from the port there is a picturesque and cozy fishing village of Pali, where not only beautiful, but also delicious - be sure to try the local fishing cuisine and stroll along the beach with volcanic sand. A few kilometers above there is an abandoned village Emporios, and at an altitude of 400 meters there is another village - Nikiya - with a magnificent sea view.

On an excursion to Nisyros, you can go from the nearby islands from 40 EUR. But be prepared for the journey to be a long one - about 10 hours.
